Back to Porat

Today was another hot one, with severe heat warnings, and temperatures between 35—37° across the island. We stayed out of the sun in the total comfort of the air conditioned apartment through the middle of the day. With Emily's work and the kids schooltime out of the way, I had a plan to see a new part of the island.

Driving in temperatures this hot, with no air con in the car, meant full windows down, hoping the breeze will cool us down. Not very effective unfortunately! We headed south along the island, past the main town of Krk, and up over the mountains in the middle of the island. The views were amazing and ever changing as we headed down the long valley towards Baska.

I had picked out what looked like free parking on Google maps, but when we arrived, it turned out to be metered parking and we didn't have the right change. The town was very busy, and after trying a few other places, we decided to drive back towards home to somewhere we knew we liked, and with good parking.

Porat has turned out to be one of our favourite places on the island of Krk. It's tucked in the side of a peninsula, looking along the bay towards Malinska. Driving through the very touristy town of Vantačići, it seems most people stop there, making Porat seem quiet. There is a small harbour, and just a few shops and cafés around it. Walking on for half a mile finds a small cove, with shady spots, sun terraces and ice cream!

This was a good decision, and we spent a few hours in and out of the sea, and eating our packed sandwiches in true English style. We have had a couple of days now where we have main meal in the apartment at lunchtime, so we can explore when it's cooler in the evening. Although that's relative, as it was still in the 30's when we left the beach after 8pm!

We had fun diving/jumping off the jetty, whilst keeping an eye out for sealife. I got attacked by a small ankle biting fish, but we avoided the sea urchins and weaver fish. Towards the end, there were some kids catching sea urchins, and their mum picked one up for our kids to have a close look, but none of them would hold it!

It was the perfect evening for our last one in Croatia, and I think the only question is when, not if, we will come back.
