Stag do!

It was nice to have a bit of a lie in this morning after all the exhausting travelling (for me and James!) and although we didn't have much for breakfast we found a local bakery to grab something from on the way.

Using mainly sign language we managed to get a little something each. Jowan and Felix had something with bacon in, Lowenna had a custard croissant, and me and James had what we thought were cinnamon buns but actually had what tasted like a mixture of raisins and poppy seeds in.

The first part of the journey was all motorway, and we'd hoped to stop for lunch at a set of dirt jumps that Felix had heard about by the lake. Unfortunately our search for these proved fruitless, despite driving into a meadow and sending Felix running across it to investigate some features seen on Google satellite view that may or may not have been dirt jumps (it appears not!)

We drove on to find a lunch stop, with the railway between us and the lake. Passing many potential routes to the lake, we finally decided to stop at Balatonfenyves. We walked along a jetty into the lake, roughly opposite where we were going to be staying, then headed back to eat lunch on a bench in the shade. Then a walk along the 'beach' - not the sandy kind we're used to in Cornwall, but a path along the water's edge with people laid out each side, and lots of people swimming and sunbathing.

We pressed on, taking the long way around the lake since going directly to our accommodation would have meant arriving too early. As we reached the west end of the lake, we spotted a large stag running across the field next to the road. We slowed right down in case it darted in front of us, but it ran between us and the car behind and crossed the road safely. It was an amazing sight but none of us reacted quickly enough to get a picture!

Then it was through the outskirts of Keszthely, which apparently has some amazing buildings, although we couldn't see them, and then the volcanic hills with their basalt columns that line the north side of the lake.

The place we're staying at, like the rest of Lake Balaton, seems quite touristy, but our accommodation is in a quiet location and with its own pool. The day was turning quite stormy, and we were all quite tired, so a quiet afternoon and evening was in order - tomorrow we explore!
