Today dawned another bright and sunny day, and James got up far too early to head off for a run by the beach, crazy man. Apparently it was far too hot for a run (well I could have told him that!), and the rest of us sensibly had our breakfast and got ready for school and work.
We'd arranged to meet Jo and Dad at the interestingly-named 'Kiek in de Kok', part of Tallinn's medieval fortifications and now a museum, after work. So we headed there just after 1pm, intending to buy a family '6 museum' ticket, which seemed amazing value at 25E for six museums for the five of us. As it turned out, it wasn't quite that simple, and it took a bit of time for the ladies at the ticket desk to work out how to sell us that ticket as apparently it's not something they do very often! It's not really surprising as the info is in a slightly obscure section of their website.
The museum at Kiek in de Kok is pretty good, and goes up and up and up - we thought we were never going to reach the top! There was plenty to read and do and all of the info was in English as well as Estonian, which isn't necessarily the norm for Tallinn's museums. We came down to about halfway up the tower and along a battlement to get to the Maiden's tower. That's billed as a museum/cafe, but to be honest there was very little to the museum part of it and our budget was running a bit low for coffee and cake, so we didn't stay long.
We headed for the photography museum, which is housed in the old city jail, an interesting building. This was the first time we'd seen the centre, although Dad and Jo had been there before we arrived in Tallinn, and in fact the first time we'd been surrounded by other tourists for a while. The museum itself was compact but interesting, and had a lot of character and some interesting artefacts.
We emerged into the city square to find a market. Some things seemed quite overpriced, but not everything, and Lowenna found a present for one of her friends, and we bought a wooden butter knife with a moose outline carved into it for 1 euro. We had a short wander around the back streets, but we didn't want to leave it too late to head back to the apartment to make dinner, so left most of it for tomorrow.
Back at the apartment, we cooked up quite a feast, partly with things we forgot to take to the BBQ the previous evening. We started with bread dipped in strawberry vinegar we bought in Germany, then for main we had an interesting beetroot salad, and a potato, onion and bacon salad, with fried mushrooms, boiled potatoes and chicken schnitzel. Then what is basically a baked cheesecake for dessert, served with blueberry and rosehip 'soppa' (puree) from Sweden. All quite sophisticated, especially when teamed with a bottle of red wine and some choice Estonian beers :)
